Porter Welfare

Since the inception of CAN Doug and CAN Trustees have always supported porter welfare.

Over the years CAN has worked in collaboration with International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) to run three porter rescue shelters in Solu-Khumbu at Gokyo, Machermo and Gorak Shep.

CAN has built all three shelters with IPPG providing volunteer doctors during peak trekking season who have provided medical care and education to guides, porters and tourists suffering from ailments, most commonly altitude sickness.

Currently discussions are underway to hand over the running of these projects to community led organisations in the Solu Khumbu.
