Sona Sherpa Memorial Fund
A Memorial Fund has been set up to support the young family of Sona Sherpa, a Sirdar and Climbing Sherpa with Community Action Treks (CAT), who tragically lost his life on the evening of Saturday 22nd June at Nanga Parbat base camp, Pakistan. If you’d like to help please contact us.
Sona was one of ten climbers from an international climbing party shot by Taliban militants. He had worked with CAT for ten years, and was a popular and respected Sirdar and climber. He was as equally at home leading parties on trekking peaks for CAT as he was climbing the South West Face of Everest on South Korean expeditions.
He leaves a wife and two young children. In launching the memorial fund Doug Scott said “Our hearts go out to his wife and his four year old and one year old sons. CAN has set up a memorial fund to help Sona’s family provide for his young children. He was a loyal and well liked Sirdar with Community Action Treks and I’m sure many of our trekkers will wish to help support Sona’s family as they face their future without him. We have already received some generous donations, which will be of some comfort to the family”.
The fund will be held and managed directly by Community Action Nepal at the request of Sona’s brother Tshiring Dorje Sherpa, who has also led many CAT treks as a Climbing Sirdar. All money sent to the fund will be ring fenced for the support of Sona’s family, with no deductions made for administration costs.

UPDATE on the Memorial Fund 15th Oct 2013
Donations and support for the Sona Sherpa Memorial fund, following his tragic death in a terrorist attack, continue to be received at the CAN office. CAN is now confident that the target of £7,500 (10 Lakh NRs) will be reached. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the fund. Your generosity and support is greatly valued by Sona’s family.
Arrangements have been made for an initial payment to Doma(Sona’s wife) to help her meet immediate needs of the family. Careful consideration is being given to how the remaining funds can be best used to ensure a long term benefit for the family.
Other mountaineering organisationshave also pledged (or have already contributed) support to Sona’s family including the Korean Mountaineering community, with whom Sona undertook some of his 8000 metres climbs, the Nepalese Mountaineering Association, the BMC and the UIAA.
