DELIVERING LIFE-CHANGING HEALTH, EDUCATION AND LIVELIHOOD PROGRAMMES IN REMOTE MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES OF NEPAL
WHO WE ARE
Community Action Nepal is a UK charity that works with some of the most remote communities in the Nepalese Himalaya, delivering life-changing education, healthcare, agriculture and livelihood programmes.
We work in partnership with local mountain communities to help them raise their standards of living whilst strengthening and protecting indigenous cultures and traditions.
HOW WE DO IT
WE ARE COMMUNITY DRIVEN
CAN delivers programmes where support is needed most. We respond to requests for support after receiving petitions for help from communities themselves. The local residents then play a key role in the planning, construction and implementation of health, education and livelihood provision.
CAN promotes local ownership of our programmes, or ensures a smooth handover to the Nepal government, so that we become a stepping stone on the path to development, and not the path itself.
WE BUILD RESILIENCE
These mountain communities we support are especially vulnerable to the impact of natural disasters, climate change and global health emergencies. Building resilience is vital for these communities to become more self-reliant on less dependent on international aid.
Our 'Build Back Better' programme after the 2015 Nepal earthquake involved the construction of seismically resilient buildings, blending traditional building materials and local craftsmanship with modern construction design.
Our response the Covid-19 pandemic supports the local communities to grow more varieties of food and create income-generating enterprises, increasing their food security and promoting economic independence.
WE ARE SUSTAINABLE
We put sustainability at the heart of everything we do.
We source local materials for construction and utilise the skills of traditional local craftspeople. This supports local economies, reduces donor dependency, preserves indigenous skills and ensures that the communities can maintain and repair the buildings using materials found locally.
Our agriculture and livelihood programmes are designed to support subsistence communities strengthen their food security by developing locally sustainable organic food production.

Before CAN interventions, there was a serious lack of health institutions and health education in this area. Many people in this area died prematurely due to lack of medical treatment.
When I talk with villagers, they seem extremely grateful and honoured to have an organisation like CAN, so I am proud to be a nurse for Community Action Nepal.

DOUG SCOTT TRIBUTE
It was with great sadness last year that our inspirational Founder, Doug Scott, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 7th, 2020.
We have spent the last months mourning and coming to terms with the new reality for the charity. To celebrate his life and achievements, as well as giving a brief overview of the future of Community Action Nepal, we have put together a tribute to Doug. You can read it here:
