Sindhupalchok District - Kutumsang

Kutumsang village is situated between Sindhupalchok and Nuwkot. Kutumsang is a tiny village of no more than 20 houses, about eight of which are lodges for trekkers. Health facilities started following representation from the villagers who presented a letter to CAN, in March 2000. Initially the post was situated in rooms below a lodge. There are about 1000 households in the Kutumsang district and many residents had to walk two to five hours to reach the alternative government facility. The CAN Health Post covers a large geographical area, (estimated population 6000). The most distant inhabitants have to walk approximately four hours to receive treatment.

By April 2001, six months after opening, the CAN nurses had received 1531 visits and treated many patients. The post is open from 10.00 a.m. and averages 15-30 visits per day, depending upon the time of year. The health workers do occasional home visits and are increasingly attending women in childbirth. The nurses make weekly visits to local schools to give health education and they distribute worm medication every six months. Malnourishment is common amongst the local people.

Both Kutumsang and the adjacent Health Post at Milarepa have received huge funding support from the Scottish Charity, Surgery in Nepal (SiN). In May 2005 a dental camp was held at Milarepa Health Post – CAN nurses are trained to do simple extractions and fillings. Milarepa Health Post was opened officially by Doug Scott, and Trish Lang from Surgery in Nepal, in September 2005. On 20 December 2005 the Milareppa Health Post was the centre of operations for a large medical camp, once again funded primarily by Surgery in Nepal. The UK registered charity Promise Nepal also took part in the leprosy screening programme.
