CAN Projects Lower Solu Khumbu Area - Lapcha Project Lapcha School is situated a further 3 km up the hillside above Ghunsa School. In 1988 a local villager donated land for a school. Due to the size of the plot, the school was very small consisting of seven rooms on two floors. Next to the building there is a playground measuring 15 x 10 metres - far too small for the 95 pupils and four teachers. The roof was of wooden construction and at the time of the original approach to CAN it was in an extremely poor condition. The school toilet was inoperable. The site is extremely exposed and, especially during the winter, it is very cold.
The school had applied to the Government to be upgraded to lower secondary level but due to the lack of village funds the appropriate financial security could not be provided. Local negotiations took place between the CAN representative and a local landowner with the view to securing additional land. CAN also agreed to support the community by building a new toilet and providing slates for the roof. Without intervention there was great danger that the whole construction would slither down the hillside during the monsoon season! By 1998 the Village Committee decided to abandon the original application, to submit a new application for support and to build a new school in an improved, safer location. By February 2001 the construction of the new school was completed and Doug Scott and Terry Mooney formally opened the school in April 2001. |
