Kaski District -
Ghyamrang School
Ghyamrang
is a small compact village in Namarjung VDC in the northern part of
Kaski district, about a day’s walk from Pokhara facing Machhapuchhre
it is situated at 1300 m, when the CAN team first came across this
school in 1999 it was in a miserable condition, mud floor, no
plaster on the walls, no toilet and no water supply. The villagers
along with the Headmaster Gum Bahadur Gurung requested possible help
to address some of the major concerns. After acquiring all the
necessary information CAN embarked on a refurbishing project that
resulted in the building of a toilet block, a water stand, a new
slated roof replacing the old tin roof and an additional four-roomed
extension. In the following two years the number of children
attending the school doubled. Eventually the school was up-graded to
lower secondary level being feed by three outlying primary schools.
This upgrade has in some cases saved children a 5-hour walk to the
nearest neighbouring school. Now the school teaches up to Class 8
and has more than 150 children regularly attending lessons.
CAN also supports a
community nursery in the nearby village of Rohigaun and other
smaller projects that support feeder communities to the main
Ghyamrang School.
