Mark Beaumont sets new World Record and helps CAN in the Process

Mark Beaumont raising money for Community Action NepalOn the 15th February 2008, Community Action Nepal supporter Mark Beaumont cycled underneath the Arc-de-Triomphe, smashing the previous cycling global circumnavigation world record by an amazing 82 days. He’d left Paris’s triumphal arch on the 5th August 2007 to circle the world - cycling over 18,000 miles, traversing 4 continents and crossing 20 countries - in an incredible 194 days and 17 hours. To set his amazing achievement in context, the previous world record stood at over 276 days. Mark’s new record has been recognised by Guinness World Records.

Mark commented, “In addition to the personal ambition of setting a new Guinness World Record, I cycled to raise awareness and money for five fantastic charities, including Community Action Nepal”.

When he set off Mark planned to do the circumnavigation in 210 days, so not only has he set a new world record by a very wide margin, he’s also surpassed his own very ambitious objective. Guinness World Records set a demanding and complex set of criteria for this challenge, which basically boils down to circling the globe on a bike – although they do allow the rider to use a ship to cross the oceans!

This was an ultra-endurance challenge of the very highest order and both Doug and Community Action Nepal are very proud to have been associated with this record setting event and are very grateful for the support Mark has given us by raising funds for our work.
