New Era for Community Action Nepal
A number of changes have recently
taken place within the charity. After eight years of dedicated
service to CAN our Fund Raising Co-ordinator Ruth Moore is retiring.
Doug Scott our Founder and Operations’ Director, with a good deal of
help and advice from the trustees, has put together a new team to
take CAN into the future, expanding its fundraising in the UK to
support a surge of new initiatives out in Nepal.
Doug has been ably supported at every
stage by CAN’s trustees, particularly Jeff Frew and Sheila West,
with support from Martin West with his expertise in personnel
issues. Dr Rob Lorge, Paul Braithwaite, Pip Hopkinson and Mel
Gillies have given their support and good advice frequently
travelling long distances to attend meetings.
The Team
-
Robin
Ashcroft, mountaineer and member of the Alpine Club who will be
taking on the role of Publicity, Marketing and Fundraising.
-
Ex Gurkha
Captain Tek Limbu will continue to support the Administration in
our UK office. 'Captain' first joined CAT and CAN out in Nepal
in the early nineties. He made many friends who could catch up
with him at Birmingham.
-
Andy
Norris has trekked widely throughout Nepal since 1982 and will continue to
be our IT Support and Web Manager. It was Andy who designed and
managed our celebration of the Buddhist Himalaya website.
-
Les Owen
has been a supporter of CAT and CAN since trekking on a Whiz
Kids Trek with CAT in 1998. He was there for the opening of
Ghunsa School and now will be working on our behalf as an
additional fundraiser.
-
Ian Wall
is our Country Representative and operations’ manager out in
Nepal, based at our Kathmandu office. He has been in post for a
year and has improved the communication link between Kathmandu
and the UK. He has conversations with Doug two or three times a
week unless he is out in the field.

Main Events in Nepal in 2008
Opening of our New Health Post at
Walung (East of Makalu) this April
Doug, Ian
and overseer, Govinda Sharma will be unveiling a plaque to The
Frank Davies Family Trust who funded the Health Post.
Building
Hostel Accommodation at Melamchigaun in October
The West
Yorkshire Scouts are helping the local Helambu Sherpa to erect
this much needed dormitory accommodation for the children of
mainly migrant workers. They will be accompanied by Ian, Govinda
and trustee Sheila West.
Opening of
Lihi Gaun Health Post in the Autumn
This will
be our most distant project involving a walk in of seven days
for Doug, Ian, Govinda and the family of the late Monique de
Meuron who funded the Health Post.
Other work
continues for example planning for the Bahrabise School for the Deaf
Hostel, building of the Gorak Shep Porter Rescue Shelter and Income
Generating Schemes throughout our area of operations. Planning is
already underway for our next mobile health camp at Kutumsang,
teacher training initiatives and further nurse training, amongst
other activities.
As with all
our projects our emphasis continues to be sustainability and
community participation. We are now six months into our five-year
plan to aim to make our projects self-sustaining and to put Nepalese
personnel more and more in the frame. We have a long way to go but
it is happening. You can help us along by participating wherever
possible in the following:
CAN’s own fundraising Skyline Trek 31
October-13 November 2008.
There are still places available and
just time to raise the necessary funding. It costs £1,600 for the
Trek and we ask that you pledge to raise another £750, all of which
will go to support the projects in Nepal.

Doug’s Lectures
Check out the lectures so far planned and if
you are able to reach any of them your support would be welcome.
Last year over £50,000 was raised from these lectures. Doug is
usually accompanied by trustees or volunteers who help to sell
Nepalese goods, his posters and books. You can also talk over any
aspects of CAN’s work and anything you think you might want to do
for CAN by way of fundraising or volunteering. We will also be
giving out information on CAT treks and there will be time to talk
about them either during the interval or afterwards. There will be a
short auction of autographed prints and posters, some by Sir Chris
Bonington and a few by the late Sir Edmund Hillary.
