CAN is very pleased to announce that we have just been awarded £202,400 by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. The funding is part of the Big Lottery’s ‘Rebuilding Communities in Nepal’ Programme which is supporting development work in post-earthquake Nepal.
Since the earthquake CAN has been working with many earthquake-affected mountain communities and work is underway to rebuild and repair over 40 projects including health posts, schools and porter shelters. Drawing on ‘Building Back Better’ principles, CAN’s staff are working on the ground with local communities to ensure that earthquake resistant features are incorporated into the reconstructed buildings so that they can withstand future shocks.
Funding from the Big Lottery will enable us to provide additional support in the villages of Melamchigaun in Sindupalchok, Ghunsa in Taplejung and the remote villages of Bihi, Prok, Lihi, Lho and Sama Gaun in North Gorkha. The project is ambitious and will enable CAN to:
- Strengthen health capacity in North Gorkha by training 5 Health Post helpers in the villages of Bihi, Prok, Lihi, Lho and Sama Gaun to work alongside CAN nurses for a period of 4 years. The health post helpers will receive supervision, training and support with their progression and this will enhance local health skills and support improved local health outcomes.
- Model new market gardens attached to the five health posts in North Gorkha by deploying 5 local horticulturists for 3 years. The Big Lottery funding will support the purchase of materials, equipment, tools and seeds to develop the market gardens at the health posts at Bihi, Prok, Lihi, Lho and Sama Gaun The project will help to diversify local diet, improve nutrition and improve food security.
- Work with local people at Melamchigaun and at Ghunsa to build a demonstration home with ‘homestay accomodation’, and provide funding for the cost of construction materials, transportation and ‘cash for work’. CAN will deploy two Construction Training Workers for two and half years to support local people to implement ‘Building Back Better’ principles in the reconstruction of their own homes as well as enhancing their building and construction skills.
- Support livelihoods of local people by helping those involved in the construction of the demonstration homes trade their new or enhanced construction skills by setting up two construction enterprises in Melamchigaun and Ghunsa and equipping them with tools and equipment. Community Enterprise support around construction, tourism and agriculture will be available from a CAN Community Enterprise Worker over a period of 4 years working across CAN communities in Melamchigaun, Ghunsa, North Gorkha and beyond to support sustainable income generation initiatives.
‘This is excellent news and means we can access some much needed funding to support CAN’s recovery work in Nepal. We are very grateful to the Big Lottery and the generosity of the British people who can have confidence that this funding will make a big difference in very practical ways in a number of the remote mountain communities where CAN operates. Working with the Big Lottery is a new development for us as a charity but we look forward to working in partnership with this major UK funder over the next 5 years’ Doug Scott CAN Operations’ Director.
