Mountain Arts Festival, Rheged Centre, Cumbria 6 – 8 November

A weekend celebrating the mountains and uplands and exploring how they inspire the practice of walking artists, painters, sculptors, writers and poets, thinkers, film makers, photographers, singers and other artists and performers.

Featuring: Sir Chris Bonington, Hamish Fulton, Simon Pierse, Phil Bartlett, Brian Thompson, Doug Scott, Julie Summers, Stephen Goodwin, Andrew Greig, Andy Parkin, Jim Curran, the work of Julian Cooper and Ali Pretty, Angela Locke, Simon Hitchens, Paul Vanstone, Cherry Smyth, Jamie Hagerman, Luke M Walker, Lucy Devenish, Neil Pittaway, Jim Lowther, Rob and Harriet Fraser, Henry Iddon, Martin Hartley and many more….

Music: Andrew Greig’s mountain songs; Jeff & Ailsa Frew -Blues duo. ‘Ice Picks & Violets’ a moving musical biography of Mallory & Irvine by Dean Johnson and featuring Dean Johnson, Jane Hamlet and narrated by Doug Scott, CBE

Saturday evening: supper and dancing to Striding Edge Ceilidh Band – the legendary Cumbrian good times dance band.  Bring your dancing shoes!

Demonstrations throughout the weekend by The Wool Clip, Caldbeck weaving co-operative and Mongolian throat singers, musician, dancers and acrobats.

RGS-IBG North Western debate chaired by Lord Inglewood: “Whose Bright Sunlit Uplands” on the future of Uplands farming. Sunday 8 Nov 2pm – 6.30pm. Includes a 3 course supper: Scotch Herdwick lamb based broth, Herdy burger served in flat bread with parsnip and rosemary salsa, followed by Lakeland tea bread and butter served with tea and coffee. OR Vegetarian option: Scotch vegetarian broth, Cumbrian Homity Pie, followed by Lakeland tea bread and butter served with tea or coffee.

Art Exhibition: opening Friday 6 Nov and remaining open to the public throughout Thursday 12 Nov, 10 am – 5 pm.
