Nepal earthquake update 30 April

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE UPDATE FROM MURARI  GAUTAM, CAN General Manager
– DAY 5, THURSDAY 30 APRIL 2015

Salaried Staff – all 59 salaried staff and their dependents are uninjured although some have lost their homes completely [Purna Gautam, Chairman of CAN MC] and others’ homes severely damaged [Murari Gautam CAN General Manager]. As far as we know, all regular CAT staff are uninjured.

Murari reports there have been over 600 aftershocks since 11.45 on Saturday morning of which 120 have been over 4.0 on the Richter Scale. Everyone is sleeping outside their homes on open spaces. CAT tents have been distributed where needed.

The most heart-wrenching situation is that of CAN’s Management Committee Treasurer and Langtang representative, Temba Lama, who was in Kathmandu when the earthquake struck. This caused a massive rock avalanche down the South Face of Langtang Lirung to completely bury the villages of Langtang and Mundu killing everyone in it including Tenjing Passang a wonderful member of the community and CAN supporter for the last 20 years.

Also the Health Post where CAN recently held a dental camp, which Virginia Dixon and the Australian Langtang Valley Health Post had just renovated, has gone with all their caring staff. Only seven villagers escaped, who were out of the village at the time. There were 100 houses with approximately 470 villagers, all have been destroyed.
