EVENT: Family walk in aid of the Sona Sherpa Memorial Fund
CAN supporter and CAT trekker Rob Mackay was greatly saddened by the tragic death of CAT Sirdar Sona Sherpa in the terrorist attack at Nanga Parbat in the spring of 2013.
Sona’s wife, Doma and their two children, Pemba Dorje and Pema Rnji now face some difficult times. CAN has therefore set up a memorial fund to raise money to help Sona’s family and Robert has generously organised this guided walk to raise funds. The walk is free to take part, but Rob hopes voluntary donations will be given to aid the education of Sona’s two sons. Click here for more details on the Sona Memorial Fund.
DATE: Sunday 27th October 2013 2.00pm – 4.30pm (approx)
MEET POINT: Meet at Donview Car Park, nr. Monymusk, Aberdeenshire.
Directions to car park: From Monymusk, head north on minor road towards Blairdaff. After approximately 1.5 miles, the car park is sign posted. Grid Ref: NJ 673 189.
This small car park is the starting point for walks around Millstone Hill which link up with the wider network of paths at Bennachie. There is an old visitor centre there, now used by five local artists as a studio. Their studio is usually open on Sundays from 11.00am – 3.00pm. From here you can walk the Millstone Hill and Mither Tap Heather Brig trails.
It is hoped that Doug Scott will be present (though not guaranteed) and will wave the walkers off with a few words about Sona Sherpa. The plan is to walk to the top of Millstone Hill (approx. 50 minutes) and then to hold a brief ceremony to respect the life of Sona Sherpa that will strive to respect the Buddhist traditions in which he lived his life. There is no cost for getting involved in this walk. Please bring your own food and drink. Voluntary donations will be sought to aid the education of Sona Sherpa’s two sons.
