CAN supporter and CAT trekker Rob Mackay was greatly saddened by the tragic death of  CAT Sirdar Sona Sherpa in the terrorist attack at Nanga Parbat in the spring of 2013.

Sona’s wife, Doma and their two children, Pemba Dorje and Pema Rnji now face some difficult times. CAN has therefore set up a memorial fund to raise money to help Sona’s family and Robert generously organised this guided walk to raise funds. Click here for more details on the Sona Memorial Fund.

Robert sent in this report and the photos from the walk.

“On Sunday 27 October there was a lovely informal ceremony on top of Millstone Hill to mark the passing of Sona Sherpa and to acknowledge his contribution. Poems were read from Godfrey Winthrop Young, Jamla Tenzing Sherpa, Eric Shipton & Nan Shepherd – card with these poems on it were consigned to the flames, and prayer flags helped to send these messages to the four corners of the world. Music by the Nepalese folk group Kutumba (thanks to my iPhone) added to the Nepalese tradition. Chocolate & Kendal Mint Cake was shared & enjoyed. Thanks to Ali, Izy, Paddy, Hazal, Kees and Sherlock & Lexie (the dogs)”.
